What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Indie rock time then folks with a 7" on 1-2-3-4 Records from Lowline who I know cack all about other than they've made a record that I'm listening to. A quick peep at the press release and I realize I know nothing about tem as this is their debut release. They're from Manchester and they actually create a reasonably powerful rock'n' roll sound which is partly due to the production from Owen Morris (Oasis, New Order, The Verve). Actually when it first started I thought it was reminiscent of the meatier Oasis stuff. 'Last Chance' has a pounding beat and is bursting with energy and a definitely has a "Manchester" sound to the vocals. Phil reckons it's like early Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

What the label says:

March 2008 sees the debut release from Lowline, arguably the most exciting new band to have emerged from Manchester in recent times.

‘Monitors’ is a timeless indie anthem, the first yield from Lowline’s own youthful and uplifting brand of rock and roll. It combines addictive melodies, compulsive rhythms and an unforgettable chorus to create what some are already regarding as one of 2008’s most significant releases.

Owen Morris (Oasis, New Order, The Verve) produces a remarkable, razor sharp record that brims with energy and promise. We see flashes of Manchester alongside notable references to Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine, but it is the bands ability to create a sound that is genuinely new that makes them so thoroughly exciting.

They have honed their craft playing a rift of raucous live shows and impromptu warehouse parties across the UK and release this single amidst a rigorous touring schedule and a massive level of radio and press interest, with major support already emerging from NME and XFM.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
