What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

A couple of 7"s on cult imprint The Great Pop Supplement have just arrived... First for a spin is by Whysp. 'The Family EP' is proper 70's hazey beard folk that makes us think of The Black Death and The Wicker man. The acoustic guitar strums along nicely with both male and female vocals. The female vocal harmony is particularly majestic. It sounds like it was kept in a time capsule from by bygone era. 'Idyll' on the flipside is simultaneously spooky and pretty and builds into a passionate folker. I'm reminded of Men An-Tol... Hand numbered edition of 300 copies in the usual lavish GPS packaging with insert.

What the label says:

6 minutes of beautiful, sprawling acoustic psych from eternally evolving, sunny, californian folk collective whsyp.

Hazy high end vocal harmonies backed with subtle sitars (courtesy of skygreen leopards, part time wooden wand backing guy glenn donaldson) which aim for the stars yet quickly turn into a darker beast as the piece closes out. A beautiful 45 in fliptop match wallet style sleeves made from linen card and in a run of 300 only….

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
