What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Yellow 6 releases a new album this week on the ever excellent Make Mine Music label. 'When The Leaves Fall Like Snow' is a 2 disc set so you get a lot of Yellow 6 for your buck on this releases. When I first listened to this I thought there was a bit of change of direction for the ole Yellow man. There's some undeniably Yellow 6 esque tracks on there with his trademark echoey flange guitar (don't know if he uses a flange but I just wanted to say the word flange.... oops I said it three times). BUT there's some long drawn out ambient droney pieces which are quite different for the man. Moments of it are a bit like early Stars of The Lid, yes it's a total dronefest at times... very bleak sounding but with elements of sunlight poking through the foreboding dark clouds. That's as poetic as I get. This is the strongest work I've heard from Yellow 6 in some time. Proper good like. Oh and the best thing is if you want to find it on our site you can search on yellow snow and i comes up first.....Flange.

What the label says:

“When The Leaves Fall Like Snow” is the latest release by the remarkably talented Leicestershire guitarist Jon Attwood (aka Yellow6), following ten years of extraordinary creativity, both in terms of quality and productivity (over 30 hours of music on labels such as Resonant, Ochre, Darla, and many more). This double album, bearing the unmistakable and highly personal Yellow6 melodic sound, was conceived and crafted in Stockholm in the autumn and winter of 2007. Reflecting its place of origin, it showcases Yellow6 at its most minimal, each of the two CDs providing the listener with a different way of experiencing the grey and white landscapes of Scandinavia.

The first CD takes you on a sweeping journey through tranquil yet incredibly deep soundscapes created by Jon Attwood’s effortlessly complex layering of sounds. Nocturnal incursions into the cold and dark realms of Swedish winter… With the sense of isolation and nostalgia one experiences when immersed in a vast alien environment. Jon Attwood’s drifting and looping guitars so sonorous and versatile that it feels at times that you’re listening to a full orchestra.

The second CD, with shorter tracks and a less ambient feel, bears the same beautiful and melancholy qualities in a more intimate way. Imagine the same landscapes but with a fragile light glimmering in the distance or with the warmth of sunlight shimmering on the snow.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'don't put your hands where you wouldn't put your face'
