What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

The Dirtbombs have opted to cover German scare-pop legends Sparks. Almost everyone that knows of the glam outsiders from Mars recalls hiding behind the telly from the creepy dude on keyboards with the Hitler-esque 'tache. Personally, my mum used to invite him round for tea & he was a most gracious gent indeed. Only murdered a couple of hamsters & a budgie to my knowledge & they ate too much anyway. On the A, they cover 'Sherlock Holmes' in a TV on the Radio meet Marc Bolan fashion. It really is quite a nice atmospheric piece with a skronking, divebombing 70's style fuzzy guitar that makes you wanna chuck oneself off gym benches at the skool disko. Except really slowly in a maudilin fashion. The flip gives us 'Nothing to Do' which has the more obvious floor filling tendencies & a more late 60's garage rock vibe. great vocal harmonies, cascading drums & a hearty nod to Daltrey & co give this side the edge. One for the mod/freakbeat discos definately! 7" only on In The Red

What the label says:

TALENT IS AN ASSET AND DETROIT'S DIRTBOMBS SURELY HAVE IT. TO ACCOMPANY THEIR NEW ALBUM, WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED, IS THIS BRAND NEW 7" IN WHICH THE BAND PAY HOMAGE TO LABEL MATES (AND ONE OF THEIR FAVORITE BANDS) SPARKS. SIDE A IS SHERLOCK HOLMES (A CUT ALSO FEATURED ON THE NEW ALBUM) WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED ON SPARKS' ANGST IN MY PANTS ALBUM. SIDE B, AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY ON THIS SINGLE, IS NOTHING TO DO, A SONG ORIGINALLY RELEASED ON THE 1975 BIG BEAT ALBUM. THIS SINGLE COMES IN A HANDSOME COLOR PICTURE SLEEVE WHICH ALSO PAYS TRIBUTE TO SPARKS' RECORD SLEEVES.2000 ONLY BEING MADE, WE ARE GETTING 250 ONLY....

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
