What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Mingus feeling ecstatic.

Various Artists: 'Little Things' (Flau) An eighteen track odyssey from the popular Japanese imprint, collects tracks from a diverse company of artists and groups including: Jasper Leyland; Hood; Part Timer; F.S. Blumm; Cokiyu and The Boats amongst others. Leyland's crisp embers of light electronica, percussive ticks and gentle strum more or less sets the course for much of this well curated set. Throughout there's a calm contemplative aura that mixes vocals with a dab of reverb, pianos that accompany voices, low end rumble, clicks and cuts detritus and guitars that ring out amongst room sounds and real life chatter. A kind of a mid-way between the quiet-loud-quiet pop of Hood, lo-fi bedroom electronica, digital sound art, heartfelt singer songwriter modes and zen-like meditative hush-pop. Listen out for Maria Hansen's lush lullaby incantations on 'Shuffle Your Feet'. It's like rubbing the crap out of eyes in the morning, satisfying.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'Are you gonna charge me for that bin?'
