Back in 2006 a rare and beautiful thing occurred. From a dusty shed–come-studio deep in the heart of Minneapolis, a debut album was lovingly conjured, whose magical intricacies and delightfully skewed, pop-perfect infectiousness meant it not only met its unprecedented hype, but exceeded it, with cow bells on. The sorcerers behind the sound were Tapes ‘n Tapes and their debut ‘The Loon’ saw them grace the pages of every credible magazine worldwide, and the likes of Letterman plead that they play his show.
Such sheer brilliance takes time and loving care. So Tapes ‘n Tapes, uninterrupted by tours, enlisted the help of producer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Mogwai), set to work on their new album. ‘Walk It Off’ is the result. As invigorating and unique as it’s predecessor, but with a force and intensity of a young band that came, conquered, grew up and grew some serious balls.
While tracks like forthcoming single ‘Hang Them All’ swirls with organ and foot stomping indie cred of old and ‘George Michael’ shimmers with jangly basslines and looped drum crescendos, the likes of ‘The Dirty Dirty’ rock and pulsate with Birthday Party-esque seductive dirge and ‘Blunt’ practically implodes with thrashing drums, metal guitar riffs and dense, impassioned vocals. If you didn’t think it could get any better than ‘The Loon’, think again.
