What we say
This record left our Phil feeling happy.
Wouter Van Veldhoven releases his first full length album after collaborating with Machinefabriek and Soccer Committee as well as a release on Slaapwel Records. Its name is 'Four Simple Songs For Five Dead Bumblebees' which really caught my attention as it's a brilliant name for a record! If that wasn't enough it comes in a tweed cloth sleeve.... Whereas I'm not so keen wearing clothes I do like my music to be casually dressed. I'd go as far as to say that the tweed outfit is probably a little more than casual... maybe even the smart country look? Here we have 5 tracks of analogue ambience created with reel to reel tape machines and field recordings. It's surprisingly warm at times with the opener ending in such a lush warm way I had to turn the heating down as it was getting a bit toasty. Otherwise if you like you're experimental ambience ala Machinefabriek, Fennesz etc and other folks who make soundscapes complete with crackles, whizzles and beautiful textures then you'll be wanting to get this. It's pretty smart actually... 300 copies only though you'll have to get a matching hat.
What the label says:
1. first simple song 2. second simple song 3. third simple song 4. fourth simple song
ETM001 CD is released on 1-3-2008
The debut full length of dutch sound artist Wouter van Veldhoven is also the first release on the eat this media label.
Wouter is becomming a well known name in the dutch experimental music scene with his reel to reel tape recorders. Seeing his live perfomance is believing; handcrafted analogue ambient. With this record he convinces the homelistener of his qualities too.
The first track opens with sounds of a wooden floor. Sounds are added, melodies float by, get recorded and degenerate. And then you wake up, realising the music has stopped and you're listening to silence, the silence of your room.
