What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus feeling happy.

Plugs: That Number EP (People In The Sky) 10" Electronic/disco pop with acidic scrawls and twittering handclaps and percussion. Highly melodic, this is quite a catchy ditty that's made as much for peak time radio play as for frugging kids at the disco. The flip side is a broken up beat, doubled up and staccato, with another high end melodic lilt powered by more hand claps and percussive fills. The aesthetic reminds me of hyper tension all male sort of Tom Tom Club. It's in the West African vibe of 'Transatlantic Airmiles' and the playful funkiness. The EP ends with a more rockist, downbeat approach with fuzzy lead and dramatic symbol splashes. A very good pop record!

Shallow Grave

People In The Sky presents the debut EP from Plugs: a four-headed, post-rave, afro-influenced groove monster.Lead track ‘That Number’ off this debut EP is threatening to become this year’s ‘Over & Over’ according to various blogs, with its slow, skewed funk and irresistible hooks proving equally formidable both on radio and on your more adventurous dancefloors (you need to hear this on a big system).
Second track ‘Transatlantic Air Miles’ casually veers off into thumb piano-driven, afro-funk territory, and ‘Shallow Grave’ is understated, leftfield guitar ‘n’ synth pop.

About the humble 10":

The 10" sits somewhere in between the 7" and 10" (kind of like a wierd cousin). This awkward variant exists for no other reason aside from to be different from it's other family members. It can provide less music than a 12" but more than a 7". It's almost like a budget 12" or a posh 7". Either way it's wierd and it needs sorting out. Maybe it's quirkyness has helped it carry on defying all rules and convention? Importantly though it plays at a multitude of speeds so it is still quintessentially a total bargain (albeit a total freak of a bargain).
