What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

For once there's some great little 7"'s out this week. I mean little in reference to their size rather than in a patronising way. Here's Cats In Paris with a fantastic debut 7" on Akoustik Anarkhy. The lead track 'Foxes' is nuts.... It's all over the shop.... Prolapse esque boy/ girl vocals punctuated by this kick ass rock bit with huge Grandaddy keyboards, Frank Black esque vocals, then it goes all jazz and then it repeats some of those things, does some other things and generally leaves me confused..... If the word schizophrenic hadn't been invented yet I'd put it in the audio dictionary with this song as it's definition. It's simply a a remarkably good piece of music which doesn't really sound like anything else and it was a very close 2nd for single of the week. If more indie records sounded like this then maybe things wouldn't be as bland as they are in indieworld. Great!!

What the label says:

Mega-limited, pink vinyl, 250 only!.
NME Radar - BUZZ band (end of March issue), Jon Kennedy Big Track Of The Week on XFM.
Foxes is the debut single by aA’s latest signing, ’Cats in Paris’ and is a thrilling prog pop epic, with punky boy girl call and response vocals and a massive arpeggiated synth riff that delivers a brand new kind of chorus.
Clearly the quartet of giddy oddball city dwellers that make this experimental pop music, wear their influences brightly on their flea collars. Spiritually suggesting a less mathematical and more upbeat version of Washington’s Apes or a cuter Deerhoof or by association, maybe the violin marinated pop of Patrick Wolf.
Texturally, in places the listener is reminded of the filigree detail found in God Speed You Black Emperor records, or perhaps the more exuberant moments of Broken Social Scene. Whatever your verdict Cats in Paris are certainly
twisting more than a few discerning ears and are surely spearheading the melodic noise scene currently keeping things interesting in Manchester.

Tracklisting - Side A: Foxes Side B: Terrapins

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'I can't believe you just said that'
