What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

This here Disrupt ft. Mikey Murka 10" is a fine way to start the morning. Shimmering metallic dub chords and a sweet head nodding rhythm with choice reggae vocal make this a winner in my book. It's extremely well executed with its highly infectious bassline and lush use of delay. On the Scotch Bonnet label. A scotch bonnet is not a tartan hat but a mega hot chilli. You'd best get the toilet paper in the fridge before eating one of those. Incidentally I chopped a chilli last week and then picked my nose before washing my hands. That shit burns man.... This 'Empress/ Second Hand Man'10" is great by the way.

What the label says:

This man is sending shockwaves throughout the reggae and dubstep
world, a purveyor of the 8-Bit sound backed by modern computer
muscle, Disrupts album Foundation Bit sold out in a day and required
immediate repress, packed with nuff original productions in his uniqu
style as well is his takes on classic riddims such as Tempo and Peenie
Peenie (Fade Away). He is described by Thom Yorke as the act to
check alongside Burial for something unique in dubstep and is also
championed by Mary Anne Hobbs. Next level dub biziness!

His cuts Empress and Brand New Second Hand are modern classics an
have the perfect blend of quality reggae music and Disrupts
unmistakable blip-beep sound. Both tracks have an upbeat offbeat
swing with a sound that interweaves around Mikey’s vocal with his
plethora of sound. The lead synth on the Second Hand dub is also
testament to his playing ability and instantly conjures up the same
images of cowboys and the Wild West felt in 80’s Jamaica along with a
heavy dub sound. These are destined to be on heavy rotation not only
on soundsytems but also by any purveyor of good quality music. Big
tings a gwaan fi Disrupt 2008, there’s no doubt about it, stay tuned!
Modern day dub master!!

Mikey Murka, Legendary Unity soundsystem veteran is well and truly Back on the
Scene Again. Last year he had a hit tune on Mungo’s Mary Jane Riddim and an album
from Reality Shock as well as other projects. His Jahtari E.P. however, is his finest
work to date and returns to his Ride pon the Riddim style. Everyone of these tune
are killers, no fillers! 2008 is going to be a big year for Mikey and these 10”s are
prime example of this mans talent as one of the UK’s finest Singjays. Check the
phenomenal version of DISRUPT and Mikey’s Sensi Addict, a wicked version of the
Horace Martin classic and dub available at www.jahtari.org

About the humble 10":

The 10" sits somewhere in between the 7" and 10" (kind of like a wierd cousin). This awkward variant exists for no other reason aside from to be different from it's other family members. It can provide less music than a 12" but more than a 7". It's almost like a budget 12" or a posh 7". Either way it's wierd and it needs sorting out. Maybe it's quirkyness has helped it carry on defying all rules and convention? Importantly though it plays at a multitude of speeds so it is still quintessentially a total bargain (albeit a total freak of a bargain).
