I have to say I was mightily impressed by that Portishead single. So much so I couldn't wait for the album. Here's their imaginatively 3rd album called 'Third' which is available on CD, 2LP and special box set thing including the double LP, a P shaped USB stick with the album on, videos and other shite, the machine Gun 12" and an art print. All wrapped up in a big box with a 'P' on (Bob). I have to say the only thing I don't like about this record is the 'P' thing. Sure it's Portishead but you'd think it 10 years they could have done something a bit different? Maybe crack out the graphic designers, photographers seeing as though it's been 10 years since we released a record?? Nah let's just wang another huge 'P' on the record... A minor quibble though.... the music is amazing. It's Portishead alright but the trip hop has been replaced by loads of amazing beats and samples.... there's some incredible drum sounds on this album. The pace is slow, the vocals are unmistakably Beth Gibbons (ie so fragile they sound like they're gonna snap in your ears) and the music sounds mardy still. It's certainly not a coffee table album like the 1st one was. The use of electronics is quite inspiring as they end up making a really old sounding record which sounds more like the Silver Apples & Ennio Morricone than anything really. It's really quite fantastic the way they've cobbled this record together to make it sound like an old record.... A future dark cinematic masterpiece. Well worth checking out you munters.
