What we say

Rating: sad This record left our Clint feeling sad.

Oh dear oh dear....The Cure are back with a single called 'The Only One'. From the very first second onwards it sounds exactly like The Cure, tuneful indie with a Fat Bob vocal so whiny that it is actually dangerous to the ears. This song is a form of torture and proceeds to go precisely nowhere. It has the feel of a sweaty middle aged double glazing salesman going through the motions one last time knowing that the young brash newcomers are using his old tricks and getting better commissions. Poor old millionaire Fat Bob - trying to keep up with the kids and getting it hopelessly wrong - I mean who uses wah wah guitar these days for Christ's sake? He actually sounds pissed on the B side on a song which somehow manages to be even worse. Retire. Now.

What the label says:

The Cure are back with a bang, with the most innovative move yet in their stellar, 3-decade spanning career, and a brand new single 'The Only One' out Tuesday 13th May.

Responsible for such classics as ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, ‘Love Cats’, ‘Just Like Heaven’ & many more besides, Robert Smith has a new vision – and that vision lies around the number ‘13’.

Their brand new studio album will be released worldwide on 13th September, with 4 consecutive, different single releases preceding the album on the 13th of each month: 13th May, 13th June, 13th July and 13th August. 'The Only One' is the first of this series, and as per the other formats, will be available on Limited CD & 7” Vinyl (with collectors boxes for both), as well as digital download. Each will have a brand new, non-album b-side.

Catering to an extremely dedicated and ravenous fanbase, which saw The Cure sell out their recent Wembley Arena concert in March in a mere 10 minutes, this unprecedented global release strategy is not only testament to the fresh thinking of Robert Smith, in this, the 30th anniversary of The Cure, but also stands to inject excitement and galvanise their many worldwide devotees, in what will surely be a most newsworthy endeavour.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
