This record left flipper de excellente feeling ecstatic.
Just arrived and I must say that it really is as good as everyone says it is! Essential! Fennesz, Tim Hecker, a bit of Eno (yes I know he worked with the guy) and of course the MBV style walls of noise ("all I need " from Isn`t anything springs to mind). Lovely :-) Doesn`t sound like old shoegaze or slowdive or whatever but totally unique electronica with nods to ambient, folktronica and dense William Basinski textures. Class! What we say
This record left our Phil feeling happy.
Televise are great. They make some lovely music they do. They're part of that whole Nu-gazing scene and Volume 3 includes key tracks from the previous 3 releases on Drifting Falling and Distant Noise which makes it a great entry point if you're looking for somewhere to start with Televise. Also if you want to get your hands of that Secret Valentine CD on Distant Noise then 7 of the 9 tracks are on here so that's your best bet of getting ahold of them
lovely tracks. There's a collaboration featuring a chap from ISAN on there 'n all. All lovely stuff and if
you're after some decent shoegazing gear smattered with some electronics and experimentation then this is perfect for you. Excellent.
What the label says:
Televise is the alias of Simon Scott, who has so far released two albums, two singles, one movie soundtrack (“How my next door neighbour discovered life on mars”) and 2007`s acclaimed mini albums/EPs “Strings and wires” and 2008`s “Sometimes splendid confusion” under this name. Televise also released a remix 7” single on Club AC30 records in October of two tracks taken from “Songs to Sing in A&E” by artists Isan and Ulrich Schnauss. His current work is mainly guitar based using organised sound samples and combining processed tones, physical manipulation of digital technology and organic field recordings taken from Simon’s Cambridgeshire home with untreated melodic progressions to form intricate, evolving audio structures. This third Televise album “Volume Three” also combines layers of looped textured noise, reversed acoustics and sequenced guitars with prepared piano and the inclusion of vocals - processed and natural - and live instrumentation allow for Televise's music to expand far beyond the constraints of the purely digital.
Volume 3 features fourteen tracks including seven of the nine tracks off the sold out 100 copy only limited edition 2nd album “Secret Valentine” released originally in February 2008 on Distant Noise records. It features a contribution from Isan`s Antony Ryan on second track “Neon Stone” and includes key tracks from the “Strings and Wires” and “Sometimes splendid confusion” EP/mini albums released on DriftingFalling.
Simon lives in Cambridge, the city he was born in and his hero Syd Barrett’s home town, where he began making music in 1998 as the drummer of The Charlottes who signed to Cherry Red before joining Slowdive in 1990. During this time Simon played on the first two slowdive albums including “Souvlaki” which featured an inspiring collaboration with ambient legend Brian Eno. After three years signed to Creation records Simon left to drum for a number of other acts including Jamie Lidell (who he went to school with), St.Etienne, Inner Sleeve, Lowgold and Chapterhouse before forming Televise in 2004. Simon is also a member of Morr Music group Seavault with Antony Ryan from Isan, contributed drums on the forthcoming album from Epic45 and also guitar on the new Populous and Hannu albums.
“Volume Three” is released on CD and digital download by his KeshRecordings label which is run by Simon from his Cambridgeshire studio. Kesh are a label sure to build up an impressive back catalogue before the end of 2008 as releases are all scheduled by Hannu, ON (Sylvain Chauveau and Steven Hess), Greg Davis, Sawako, Emanuele Errante, Benoit Pioulard, Ateleia, Christopher Bissonnette, Adam Pacione, Mark Templeton, Moskitoo, Dale Lloyd, Leafcutter John and Keiichi Sugimoto (fourcolor/filfla/fonica/minamo).
